Heworths Liam Jackson & Callum Worthington to represent Heworth for York & District.
There has been somewhat of a resurgence of the York & District Rugby League over the past year or so spearheaded by York rugby league stalwarts Spen Allison and Leigh Paul-Rientoul. It all started with the East v West game in memory of York rugby league hero Stuart Evans and his wife Jackie. That game pitted the best from the east of the river against those from the west. The game, dubbed ‘Yorigin’ was an undoubtable success with over a 1000 people turning up to watch what is now hopefully a yearly contest. It more than helped rekindle the flames of the city’s amateur rugby association, in fact it has enabled them to burn with such ferocity something had to be done with the energy it was creating and what was the best thing to do, make history of course!
Leigh and rugby league patron Gary Dickenson, who has done a lot of the organisation behind the scenes, set out to make history by devising York & District’s first ever tour. Leigh, York Acorn, Wests and Yorkshire head coach has previously toured the Ukraine with a British BARLA side and made some good friends while touring over there and one of those friends answered his call to host this significant tour. The history makers will be heading out to Eastern Europe in June more specifically to the Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv to take part in an international 9’s tournament which will also feature international select sides from not only the Ukraine but Poland and Italy too. The squad will be made up from a selection of players from York’s amateur clubs with coaching and back room staff also been drawn from those same clubs. This tour gives opportunity to those players who sometimes do not get the recognition or chance to play for their county or country and it is sincerely hoped that this expedition will be so successful that it will carry on in the years to come giving others the chance to represent their city around the world.
Some sponsorship has already been sort but much of the tour will be funded by those going it is hoped other sponsors will step forward to enable their company to support and be part of something special, if anyone is willing or can contribute however small please contact Leigh on 07854 378293.
