This is my second spell as Club Chairman. I have had an affiliation with the club from a young age, playing through the junior ranks and open age. I've even recently tried my hand at a game of masters rugby. I also coach my sons team at the club and help out with my other sons team where i can. I took on the role as Chairman to move the club forward in every area.
Started playing at Heworth in 1988 as an 8 year old and played through the juniors and open age. Had a brief spell with York city knights in 2003 before returning to Heworth and gained county selection that year for the under 23s. Went on to represent Yorkshire at open age level in 2008 before 'retiring' at the end of the 2010/2011 season. Made about 20 comebacks since and even pulled on a first team shirt this season! A member of the masters and this is my first year as vice chairman, carrying out various rolls within the club. Assistants assistant to the under 11s.
My association with Heworth started in 1967, playing in the under 19 and open age sides in the Leeds & District ARL competition. My first ‘term’ didn’t last long, however, as in October 1971 I signed for Hunslet RLFC and was fortunate to have a semi-professional career which lasted until I returned to Heworth in September 1983.
I came back thinking I might have a couple of seasons in me, but in the end managed another 8 first team campaigns before retiring (for the first time) at the end of season 1990/91, aged 41. This was a good time to be at Heworth and I was lucky to be part of a very good team that reached a Yorkshire Cup Final, won the National League in its inaugural year and played against professional sides in the Challenge Cup. I later had a season in the York & District Sunday League and played my last first team game for Heworth at the age of 50. But there will be no further comebacks from me.
I am currently the club Secretary and a Trustee (along with Barry Jackson and Peter Ulliott) and have been a committee member since 1990.
I was originally treasurer of the supporters club and took over as the main treasurer in 1991 to look after club finances. I also look after the clubhouse bar including ground machinery, orders etc. Took over as President in 2017.
I joined the club as a schoolboy in 1965 playing in the Under 17,s, eventually I was to captain the first team and the York Amateur team in my playing days. I formed the first junior teams in 1979 being Secretary and Coach for several years, I have previously been the Club Treasurer and have been a Trustee of the Club for over 20 years.
Barry has been involved with Heworth for some 55 years now and has undertaken every roll possible within the club. He captained each team at every age group, represented for Yorkshire & Great Britain, and spent 4 years as a pro for Doncaster.
A lifelong sports and RL fan I have played at Colts and amateur level within York and more recently as a 'Master' in my twilight rugby years! I am a qualified level 2 coach and referee, and have been on the committee for the past 5 seasons and more recently have become the CWO for Heworth.
Joe Murphy - started at heworth in 1994 playing for the under 12s team and played right up to the open age side. Super league young player of the year 1999. Over the past four years I have helped out with coaching the 2nd team. I have been on the committee for five years. During this time I have contributed to finding sponsors and ordering the kit for the open age and arranging social events.
Dave has been a keen local amateur sportsman having lived in York all his life. Played rugby league at Scarcroft School and followed York in their old Clarence Stree days. First became involved with the Club through lifelong friend, work colleague and Heworth trustee Barry Jackson. Played for the Sunday team in the late 1970's and took up an active voluntary role after his playing days were over and was awarded Life Membership in 2015.
